Pearlcatcher Dragons by neondragon Pearlcatcher Dragons by neondragon
Snippet
After hatching, pearlcatcher dragons will immediately proceed to consume their eggshells before their wings have finished drying. Several hours later, they will regurgitate up a large, lustrous pearl that they carry with them throughout their lives. They are highly protective of these pearls; if presented with the dilemma of choosing to save their eggs or save their pearl, they will choose their pearl without fail.

Diet
Pearlcatcher dragons will consume any plants or insects they can get their claws on. Keeping your lair well-stocked in these foods will mean that no one goes hungry.

Physical Attributes
Pearlcatcher dragons are a smaller dragon that can grow to the size of a very large horse. Females have a single horn on their forehead, while males have two, with a much smaller horn preceding the main one. Pearlcatchers have compact bodies and leathery wings. A short mane runs down the length of their head and neck, and tufts of fur can be found on their elbows, ankles, and tail tips.. Two long, sensitive whiskers grow from their muzzles, and they have large, mobile ears.

So do the Pearlcatcher stay with their pearl at all times? If so, then how do they walk around without being separated from their pearl?

They do, its their prized possession~
I'm sure they find a way SOMEHOW. Maybe the pearl can float like you see with Chinese lung dragons?

Not to be such a killjoy, plus Pearlcatchers are my favourite dragons, but how was that tiny juvenile supposed to regurgitate that huge pearl that it's holding? ^^;

snakes unhinge their jaws, maybe this does the same. (and the more obvious answer DRAGONS ARE MAGIC)

:XD: Artistic license! I suppose I shouldn't delve into the logic behind things of art too much. :meow:

i couldn't help but notice that everyone seems to question how such a small dragon could regurgitate such a large pearl. i know some artistic liberties were taken, but perhaps to explain this you could go with the explanation that upon regurgitation the pearl begins to grow in size. the world is very magic oriented so an expanding pearl isn't too farfetched what with magic going around as it is. plus if you went with this it kind of gives reason for the pearlcatchers to believe that the pearl is some form of their soul.

I love the behaviour of this dragon it is very interesting, especially where they will save their pearl instead of their eggs if given the choice to save only one.
That's a fairly large pearl for the baby to regurgitate, I'm guessing their esophagus expands like a snake's to allow that?

Wonderful design :)

Thank you.

Open Species: Sort of? They're for a game I'm working on with some frens. The first preview video (elements and dragon creation) might better explain how they are used: [link] If you're talking about open species how artists on DA usually do, its' fine if you want to draw up your own Pearlcatcher. :-)

the pearl the hatchling is holding... yeesh it's about the same size as the young dragon.
